Every construction project requires an estimate of the amount of steel to be used in the projects before starting. In addition to knowing the amount of steel required for projects, it is also needed in the transportation sector to transport the steel to the construction site.

In the transport sector, steel bar formula is needed to know the average quantity of steel to be purchased and the weight of steel, with the help of which round bar, steel plates ( Can also estimate the weight and weight of steel plates, steel pipes, I beam, H beam slabs and columns.

Generally, the weight of steel is equal to the volume and density of the steel.

For example, mass = volume x density

Formula is W = D²L/162

Where

W = weight of steel bar

D = diameter of steel bar in millimeters

L = length of steel bar in meters

Example (1) – Calculate the weight of a 12 mm diameter bar 60 m long

Here D = 12 mm

  • L = 60 m
  • We know that W = D²L/162
  • W = 12²X 60/162 = 53 kg

The weight of a 60 m 12 mm bar is 53 kg.

Let’s look at another example.

Example (2)- 100 m 16 mm bar . calculate the weight of

Here, D = 16 mm.

  L = 100 m.

W(weight) = 16²x 100/162 = 158 kg.

If we put 1 meter of length for each diameter of the steel bar in the formula we will get the unit weight.

6 mm∅ bar = 6²x1/162 = 0.222 kg/m

8 mm∅ bar = 8²x1/162 = 0.395 kg/m

10 mm∅ bar = 10²x1/162 = 0.617 kg/m

12 mm bar = 12²x1/162 = 0.888 kg/m

16 mm∅ bar = 16²x1/162 = 1.580 kg/m

20 mm∅ bar = 20²x1/162 = 2.469 kg/m

 

If we multiply the length of the rods by the unit weight, we will get the total weight of the steel rods.

For example, the total weight of a 20 mm steel bar 1000 m long is,

= 1000 x 2.469 = 2469 kg.

 

Using this formula we can calculate the unit weight of different steel bars.

Here I have calculated in meters but we can calculate in feet also. To calculate in feet we have to use the following formula;

W = D²L/533

where D = diameter of the rods in mm.

L = length of rods in feet.
